meet Nemo

tonight we purchased our first family pet. we love animals, just haven't before committed to the idea of taking care of one ourselves, as neither a military life or little kiddos toddling around is conducive to what I would call an ideal environment for a living, breathing, non-human being to take care of!

that said, this morning, I told my husband that I think it would be fun to get a fish! I am not even sure I had thought more than 30 seconds on the idea before blurting that out to him as if it were the most pressing notion I had. I didn't think anything would come of it anytime soon.

well, tonight, we decided to get dinner out after our church service. lo and behold, across from Chipotle there just happened to be a Petsmart! I suggested maybe we run in and check out the fish. we did. and now he is in our kitchen in a small fishbowl with fun blue fake rock things on the bottom for decoration.

ethan named him Nemo.

he loves him. he just stood on a chair and watched him swim around. he helped my husband feed him.

I have one experience with Betta fish. years ago, a friend asked me to feed her friend's fish while her friend was going to be out of town. i'm not quite sure how this all worked out, but somehow I agreed. I diligently drove to another part of town every day to feed this girl's fish. finally, on the last day of my fish duties, I was checking out the aquarium in a little more detail and noticed a filter thing that extended out of the fish's aquarium and went to....another aquarium! oh no! all this time I had been feeding said fish and NOT feeding the other fish! [funny/interesting thing about the word fish (just like deer and moose, although no friends have asked me to feed their pet deer or moose). the singular and plural form are the SAME. kind of tricky when someone asks you to feed their FISH. I guess I should have clarified...would that be one or two?] it all worked out, though. the fish lived through my mistake and I don't think the girl/plural fish owner even noticed that one of her fish was a few micrograms lighter after my care!

here's to a better go-around with the newest member of the Thomasson family!
