step into a new space

I've never thought of myself as a creative person. Right brain thinker. Concrete. Factual. I thought creativity was only for those people-- the doodlers, the writers, the artsy type who grew up slinging clay and composing lyrics. Not a lot of room in my world for “both-and” (more on that another time), so being science-driven clearly couldn’t mesh with the creative world. Oh, was I wrong. Creativity isn’t a category for only certain people to attain to. And while we all have gifts and talents to varying degrees, we all are created as image bearers. Imago Dei— in the image of God. Creator God, who merely breathed the word and an entire universe was made. And while our reflective creativity is never as flawless as our Father’s, it is still a way we show His creativity in the world He has made. Sometimes that creativity is bringing order from chaos, sometimes it is an expression of art that points to beauty and life. Sometimes it is baked; sometimes it is photographed. The end result and method is varied; the goal is the same: make much of who God is. A funny joke, a beautiful portrait— all can be ways to glorify God. My gifts and talents may not be the same as the next one, but I can rest assured that the stirrings in my heart are a way He has created me to reflect Him. How can I let that slip by? So I will step into this new space, one faithful and courageous word/picture/cookie at a time, and let God make of it what He will. For His glory and my good.
