these two {ethan update}

these days are filled with caring for, teaching, playing with, and loving on our two boys. some days, I am flat worn out. other days, energy comes at just the right moments. oftentimes, it requires a diet coke.

or two.

and since i'm not writing updates as often as I did through their first years, I thought I would catch you up on each of our boys.

{ethan}

our firstborn turned three last week. three. while this third year of life felt super long at times, in reality, it breezed by. i think it's easy with your first to want them to achieve so much, so quickly. always anticipating the next milestone of development or learning. sometimes i have to look at him and, childish behavior and all, be thankful that he doesn't act five. or eight. or ten. i want him to be exactly who he is. i call him my little Peter Pan, because he (often) tells me that he doesn't want to grow up. he wants to be my little boy forever. I assure him that he will always be my little boy, even when he is all grown up.

ethan is inquisitive. he connects concepts more than I expected at this point and continually surprises us with his questions. his vocabulary always impresses me and others and we have really good conversations sometimes. he wants to understand and will keep asking until he does. as a not-good-question-asker, I appreciate this about him and hope it continues throughout his life.

ethan needs about .2 seconds of being awake before he is ready to play. he LOVES stories and wants us to tell him stories all the time-- Bible stories, stories about Sheriff Woody, stories about mickey mouse, or the random (and pretty lame if you ask me) stories I make up on the spot, etc. he loves reading books with us and is learning the familiar ones to "read" to us. he loves music and singing and will pretend to sing the words to a song, even if he doesn't quite have them down yet. he loves wrestling with daddy on the floor. he loves climbing on obstacles that are way above him at the playground. he likes a challenge and he is persistent. he likes to hold our hands while on walks (which is a bit tricky while pushing a stroller, too) and tells us often, "I wuv you bery much, mama/daddy". he's a great helper and will often throw away dirty diapers for me, clean up toys, and help me cook/bake.

ethan is so excited about his baby sister. he comes up and talks to my belly, calls her by (what we are pretty sure will be her) name and tells her we "wuv" her. it's so precious. he is a fabulous big brother in so many ways. he already protects his little brother and they play well, laughing and roaring and all over the place together.

ethan is my long and lean boy. he may always be my slim Jim. he wears 3T clothing, some 4T shirts. ethan is mostly potty-trained, still wearing his "bedtime underwear" for nighttime. speaking of bedtime, with a third baby on the way, we are making the transition of the boys sharing a room. step number one was a "big bed" for ethan-- a twin-sized bed, so his brother can have the crib/toddler bed. we set it up a few weeks ago and he loves it!

he is three. I am excited about what this fourth year of his sweet life will bring and ever so grateful (and humbled) that God has allowed me to be his mommy. it is the most challenging, sanctifying, and beautiful experience I have ever had.
