meditation week 17

did you notice that I skipped last week? I was fully aware, but I was reading through a lot (psalms and Hebrews) and just never pinpointed one passage in particular to post. I finished Hebrews (times two), so we'll see what's next!

this week, I am meditating on yet another psalm. psalm 24 is one that my husband and I memorized together a few years back and has so much in its content. I read it aloud to my sons yesterday morning and was explaining parts of it to my two-year-old (which is a great exercise, by the way. they say, if you can teach it, then you really know it...). making the word of God applicable to little ones isn't hard, necessarily, for the Gospel applies to everyone! but explaining it in terms he can understand and relate to is the hard (but fun) part.

"the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof..." (v.1)
EVERYTHING belongs to God! he made everything and it is all His! he allows us to take care of what He has wondrously created and graciously provided.

"he who has clean hands and a pure heart,..." (v.4)
a great opportunity to, again, point to Christ, and declare that we cannot and were not intended to be perfect on our own; we need Jesus. he needs Jesus. mommy needs Jesus. everyone needs Jesus.

"such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob" (v. 6).
pursue Christ, behold Him, delight in Him. then we will become like Him.

"who is this King of glory? the Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!" (v.8)
our God is GREAT! he is a warrior! he is strong, and powerful, and able! in a parenting book I am currently reading, in admonishing parents to give children a vision for the glory of God, the author writes, "Your children are not likely to grow into adults who truly know God unless you provide them with a big God who is worthy of worship." every minute of each day provides opportunity to paint a picture of the greatness of our God.

-wow, look at this tree-- it's huge! who made this tree, ethan? God made ALL the trees!
-yes, Tarzan is strong. he is a strong man. but God is the strongest, stronger than any man, even stronger than Tarzan. (yes, Tarzan is the favorite movie of the week).
-isn't this song fun? i'm so glad God gave us music, so we can sing and play instruments to praise him!

(with kids, you just have to get over feeling cheesy when you talk about God in these ways. because they need to hear it. and I need to hear it. because when we hear it and say it, the Truth of who God is gets inside of us. and it changes the way we think and live.)
