two-in-one holiday week fun

so, being in the military often means...

a) you miss celebrating holidays/special occasions together
b) you rarely celebrate holidays/special occasions on the actual holiday/special occasion
c) you sometimes get to celebrate the holiday/special occasion twice
d) some lovely combination of a, b, and c

our family is no exception. we have had years where my husband has been gone for Thanksgiving, Christmas, our anniversary, his birthday (that one is kind of a joke-- I think he has only been home for one of his birthdays since we've been married), etc. you can get upset about it or you can roll with it and make the most of it! (or you can do both, where you do the first only to finally come around and do the second with a smile-- hey, no one is perfect!).

this week is a special week for our family. we are, for the first time, not spending the Thanksgiving holiday with one of our extended families! it stinks, but it just wasn't the best plan this year, as we are farther from our families than in the past. that said, this week, we are hosting Thanksgiving! that's right-- I go from not being with our families for the holiday to having friends come and celebrate the holiday at our house! I love, love, love hostessing, so I am super excited about the opportunity...and a tad nervous, wanting our good friends to feel at home and not too sad about missing the holiday with their extended families. I think I am most nervous about the turkey. whereas I have always contributed to the meal by making a dish or two, I have never been in charge of the bird. oh, the pressure!

my first Thanksgiving turkey!

another special part of our week is that we only have to wait three days after thanksgiving before celebrating Christmas as a family! while the rest of the country has been getting over the election, I have been in Christmas mode! the tree is going up, presents are being wrapped, and Christmas music is filling our house! two bonuses to celebrating Christmas early are 1) no crazy rush in the stores AND then 2) we have the entire Christmas season to relax and enjoy celebrating the coming of Christ without the usual hustle and bustle. I have some fun activities planned for my little guys during that time, including activities to celebrate Advent and a fun Christmas book to read and learn why we celebrate Christmas with the traditions that we do. I am excited!

we have much to be thankful for and I am grateful to be celebrating this special time of year with family and friends! all glory to Jesus Christ for His salvation, blessings, and provision in our lives!
