adventures in rsv
respiratory.syncytial.virus.
we've become really familiar with these three words over the past few days.
my friend Lea has explained rsv in very helpful terms, especially for mamas taking care of their little ones. check out her medical mondays posts!
it all started with a stuffy nose. then a little cough. abdominal retractions and excessive sleepiness were the tip-off that led us to the pediatrician. rsv test was positive. to the hospital we go!
taking your less-than-two-week-old to the hospital to be admitted is zero fun. taking your newborn with rsv to the hospital and realizing that it could be so much worse is eye-opening.
we made it through a 4-day and 3-night stay with only supplemental oxygen and nasal suction! no IVs, no blood draws, no extensive workup. our little guy did great-- he ate like a champ, put out more wet/dirty diapers than i care to admit, and had all the nurses oohing and aahing over his cuteness. of course they were.
the biggest answer to prayer (and i mean that. something we specifically prayed for.) was that Levi had no fever throughout the entire stay. this kept him from having a septic workup, which includes bloodwork, blood cultures, lumbar puncture, etc. no, thanks!
Levi showed great improvement throughout our stay and finally proved to the medical team that he didn't need any more supplemental oxygen. we are all home now and he is doing great!
some highlights of our hospital stay:
extra time with my dear husband.
cable tv. i watched more food network than should be allowed in a 3-day time period.
being asked in the elevator by a perfect stranger if i am pregnant. yeesh. that's ok-- it gave me the opportunity to talk about my sweet boy!
wonderful staff. we were taken great care of by the nurses, residents, physicians, etc.

germ sharing? nah, not at our house! |
poor little guy |
making faces to help the time pass... |
chillin' at the hospital-- the nurse brought a musical mobile for entertainment |
tuckered out from all this attention |
no supplemental oxygen! going home! |
oh man! i'm so glad he's alright and you didn't have to have any iv's. i remember how that was with nora and rsv. it's not fun to see the iv's in your little ones. glad you are at home now!
ReplyDeleteGIRL! oh my goodness I am so sorry you guys had to go through this... but man that little Levi is so amazing! What a trooper! And so awesome that he never even got a fever or any other issue. Praise God for that... and praise him that Levi had plenty of time to cook so he could get nice and big and healthy inside you before coming out to this germy world! :) thanks for updating us about your week! You are on awesome mama!!
