salted caramel brownies

these brownies are delicious. just in case you weren't convinced by the title of this post.

paula dean, you are the woman!

i saw paula make these on her show last week and i knew i needed to try them! i made them for our annual pumpkin party and they were incredible! i mean, who doesn't like the salty-sweet combination, on top of chocolate brownie goodness?!

here's the recipe:

salted caramel brownies

brownies:

one box devil's food cake mix

3/4 cup butter, melted

1/3 cup evaporated milk

1 large egg

caramel topping:

1/3 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar

6 tbs whole milk

1/4 cup butter

2 cups confectioner's sugar, sifted

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 tsp sea salt

preheat the oven to 350 degrees. spray a 13x9 inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.

in a large bowl, combine the cake mix, melted butter, evaporated milk, and egg. stir until smooth (the batter will be thick). spread the chocolate mixture evenly in the prepared pan. bake for 20 to 25 minutes.

in a medium saucepan, combine the brown sugar, milk, and butter. bring to a simmer over medium heat. simmer three minutes. transfer to a large bowl. gradually add the confectioner's sugar, beating at medium speed until combined. beat in the vanilla. gently spead over the brownies; the frosting will thicken as it cools. sprinkle with the sea salt. cool completely.

paula recommends that you serve the brownies with ice cream, bananas, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream. she would. i prefer a large glass of skim milk.

the brownies are more cake-like than i prefer a brownie to be, so next time i might make my regular brownie recipe (or even a box brownie mix-- my favorite is betty crocker triple chocolate chunk), then finish up with paula dean's caramel sauce recipe, with the sea salt on top.

i meant to take a picture of the brownies, but completely forgot as i was preparing other foods and getting the house ready for a pumpkin party. you'll just have to take my word for it that they are delish!
