saying goodbye

i haven't had to say goodbye much in my life. i moved to charleston when i was seven years old, so the friendships i had prior to that move weren't very deep and the memories only vague. other than four years away for undergrad (to upstate SC), i have lived in charleston (or its surrounding areas) since. i have said goodbye to college friends, co-workers, etc., but goodbyes haven't been a way of life.

until now.

i am an air force spouse now. clearly, this means that where my husband goes (minus deployments), i go too. i am proud to be an air force wife. i am thankful for the opportunity to support my husband as he serves and sacrifices for the United States of America.

i am learning that this means a lot of goodbyes in my future. goodbyes to family and friends as we move from place to place. as the saying goes, home is where the air force sends you.

as we anticipate an early 2012 move, friends close to us are moving. each time another friend goes, it gets a little closer to home, because i realize that soon, very soon, we too will be sorting through household goods, calling a rental company, emptying out our refrigerator, and (deep breath) saying goodbye.

i am sad to say goodbye to dear friends. i am sad to think about leaving family and friends and a place i love to call home. i am thankful that, despite the sadness of these goodbyes, relationships will be built and strengthened, with "old" friends and new ones, and that our family will be stronger as a result. maybe home isn't just where the air force sends you, it's when you're together again.

  1. I like that..."when your together again." The screen looks a little blurry right now...a'hem *sniff*. I was glad when your plans for 2011 changed and delayed your move because it meant that I didn't have to think about it for a few more months. I'm sure it's hard saying goodbye to your friends--I can't imagine, and I'm not looking forward to saying goodbye to my life-long friend. YRBS
