making a different kind of cake

more cake decorating, but this cake didn't involve baking and i didn't learn it in a class! my nephew Wesley will be arriving in April, and i made my first diaper cake for his baby shower! i have never made a diaper cake, so i used online resources to figure it out. here's how i made my diaper cake:
materials needed: ~60 diapers, ~60 rubber bands (mostly small, a few large), a cake platter, a centerpiece (i.e. bottle of baby lotion or shampoo, diaper ointment, etc.), baby items for "bedazzle" (i.e. pacifiers, socks, etc.), ribbon

first step: roll diapers (beginning with waist-side), then secure with a small rubber band. line diapers around centerpiece, then secure with a large rubber band. i used size 1 diapers, but you can use whatever size you like. just keep in mind that the larger the size you use, the "taller" the cake layers.

the bottom cake layer will have two rows of diapers.

line the second layer with a row of diapers. for mine, i added a staggered second row of diapers to widen it due to my large centerpiece (see final picture).

make a single row of diapers for the top cake layer. if you use a bottle of baby lotion or shampoo for the centerpiece, you may need to add a smaller bottle to be the centerpiece of the top layer.

final step: add the flare! secure a ribbon around each cake layer for decoration and add socks, pacifiers, washcloths, extra ribbon, cute buttons, etc. to dress up the cake and match whatever theme you are going for. we had a baseball-themed shower, so all the decorations were baseball! i used a hot glue gun and safety pins to secure all the extra pieces, just keep in mind that you are pinning through diapers that will be used, so be careful where you pin!

have fun cake-decorating!
