meditation week 15

I have been reading through the book of Psalms this week. sometimes, I like to change up my daily reading and just pour over the Psalms. they are so good. always. real and raw, the Psalmist just lays it out there. his rejoicing. his laments. his grief. his pain. his joy. his anguish. his troubles. his delight.

life is not always peachy. or haven't you noticed? sometimes, even amidst the blessings, our hearts are heavy within us. our sin is staring us in the face as our flesh has won again. relationships aren't perfect and we just can't seem to break through the issues. our work, our kids, our house-- life is whizzing by and we feel like we are spinning right along with it. we feel deeply, if we let ourselves have a minute and process what's going on in and outside of us. but, then what? what do we say? who do we turn to? tv doctors? chicken soup for the soul? social media? self-help books that just put a superficial Band-Aid on the problem? well-meaning friends that say what we want to hear instead of speaking the truth in love?

the Psalmist demonstrates for us. we go to God. yes, there are times for Godly counsel. we go to God. sometimes talking it out with a friend is helpful. WE GO TO GOD. we give him all our emotions, all that we feel and think and all the joy and pain and happiness and wounds. he can handle it. he can handle it.

here are some specific verses that have been a blessing to me over the last week:

"I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning." psalm 130:5-6

"O Israel, hope in the Lord! for with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption." psalm 130:7

"I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High." psalm 9:1-2

"Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come;..." psalm 71:3

"Blessed be the Lord! for he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy. the Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him." psalm 28:6-7

"When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?" psalm 8:3-4

"But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head." psalm 3:3

side note: if you want to read through all the Psalms in one month (30 days, 150 chapters), begin on day 1 reading psalm 1, 31, 61, 91, 121. day 2, psalm 2, 32, 62, 92, 122. by the end of the month, you will have read them all!
