five years
my husband and I just celebrated five years of marriage. five years!
in some ways, that seems like a long time. weren't we just playing on a frisbee field, watching each other from a distance, convinced that the other didn't even remember our name? but, at the same time, I feel like I have known this man forever, loved him always, and have been blessed by his friendship for decades.
that's the beauty of marriage. it's not easy. but it's always worth it. it's not a chic flick. but it can be full of romance, passion, and excitement. it's not for wimps. but nothing worth having is. it's not a contract. but it's a so-much-better-than-contract relationship. it's not always lovey-dovey. but it's a friendship that carries depth and meaning. it's not agreeing about everything. but it's walking through disagreements on the same team, with a heart for the other and wanting the best for them.
when Jesus Christ is the center of a marriage, that man and woman can enjoy a relationship together built on more than circumstance-dependent happiness, wishy-washy feelings, and let-down expectations. they can receive grace and extend grace. they can have a glimpse of the relationship of Christ and His church in a way that no other relationship portrays. they can be an example to a love-starved world of what love really is and can be. they can be head-over-heels, crazy about each other and share a unique closeness that no computer-generated image or fleeting infatuation can even try to compare to. they can have a long fuse and a short memory. they can walk through life, hand-in-hand, knowing that whatever comes (cause it will), they can cling to a hope that can never be destroyed. not the hope of a good or happy marriage, but the hope of Jesus Christ and His unfailing love.
marriage is a gift. one I am ever grateful for. life is crazy. days are sometimes long. the time we get to sleep is sometimes way too short. but through all the crazy, unending, and tiring days, I am blessed to walk alongside this man as his helper, his friend, his one love, his wife.
