30 minutes a day

I am 51 days into p90x3. for those of you who don't know much about this p90x talk, it's a 90-day exercise program. the bonus feature of p90x3 is that each workout is 30 minutes. only thirty minutes. you can just about do anything for 30 minutes a day, right? my sister is a beachbody coach (shout out, bekah!) and gave this program to my husband and I for Christmas. I was SO excited! and a little nervous. could I really stick with something like this for 90 days? especially someone like me, who doesn't really love exercise videos?

I decided to start mid-January. That timing just worked best for our post- Christmas and new year plans. I started on a Tuesday cause sometimes you just need to start something mid-week, right? no real plan there, it's just how it worked out.

a little background-- I enjoy working out. I know, shocking. exercise is my stress outlet. I need to exercise or I get antsy. I am a runner, mostly, and I have learned through the years that my body requires cardio for stress maintenance as much as for weight control. I love swimming; and I most recently was enjoying a cardio kickboxing class at our local Y. I do free weights a few times a week, but i'm a "low weights, high rep" kind of person-- never any intense weight training in my past. p90x3 efficiently supercedes most fitness routines because a) you do a variety of workouts that, together, achieve overall muscle toning, balance, agility, core strengthening, and cardio and, b) it's only 30 minutes a day. you put in the time and, as each workout works together, the results come. I have been most surprised by the fact that I haven't missed running. I mean, I miss it, as in I am excited to run again soon, but I don't work out and then still feel like I need to go for a run. like I have felt after completing other workout videos in the past.

I will say-- sometimes these thirty-minute workouts turn into an hour and fifteen minutes. *pause* fix someone breakfast. *pause* settle a sibling issue. *pause* put a pacifier back in Evelyn's mouth. *pause* help someone go potty, find a toy, etc. it's life. most days, my workouts are done with the kids running around and playing. I just remind them it's mommy's time to exercise and to watch out (!) especially on the martial arts workout day. (don't worry-- no Thomasson children have been injured in the completion of this workout series). it's a great example and reminder for them that "mommy exercises so she can be strong and healthy to take care of you kids". and to keep my sanity.

I will also admit that I haven't gone on any crazy or extreme food challenge simultaneously. for a few reasons: one, we just try to eat healthy in general. real food in moderation. we eat out maybe once a month. and we limit a good number of processed foods. we don't do this perfectly, but we're improving. two, I am still nursing a baby, so my "normal" consumption of food is a bit ridiculous. my food "challenge" is choosing good and filling snacks for me and my baby. three, I don't really want to lose weight, just readjust it appropriately. that may sound dumb or obnoxious, but I don't want to weigh less; I want to be strong, healthy, and fit. and I want to fit into my pants, which means not losing a bunch of weight. so I still eat my chocolate chips (in moderation. most days.); I just eat lots of veggies, cheese, fruit, yogurt, granola bars, and peanut butter too.

so, that's the skinny on this fun fitness challenge for me. I still have 39 days to go, but I feel stronger and more fit already. I am pleasantly surprised to really enjoy working out to a video each day. and I even laugh at most of Tony Horton's jokes.
