road trip for flowers

ever get an itch for a road trip?

i do.

road trips were a common occurrence where we used to live-- with grandparents practically down the street and the other grandparents just an 8-hour-drive away, we had lots of opportunities to hop in the car and go.

here, not so much. the opportunities are endless, no doubt. we live in a beautiful state with tons to explore. I just find that when my husband is home, be it the weekend or a random day off in the middle of the week, I am so content just being home. just a regular day to relax together, work on home projects, play with the boys, whatever. the only bad thing about that is, with the military only giving you a few years in each location, you only have so much time to explore the surroundings. before we know it, we may be off to our new "home" and it may not be as glamorous as this one.

so, my road trip itch is itching.

a few weeks ago, I had the same itch. some friends had driven upstate and came back with beautiful pictures of an annual tulip festival. at the risk of copying their idea, I knew we had to go! we set out that weekend for our flower day trip. it just happened to be a perfect spring day in Washington, so the rain was heavy and the skies were gray. we didn't let it stop us.

until our potty-training 2-year-old needed a bathroom break.

and then we stopped "on the way" to check out a desk I had found on craigslist.

we finally managed to make it to the cute town where this tulip festival is held each april. the rain stopped long enough for me to take a gazillion pictures and us to wander around and see all the beauty that is tulip fields.

amazing.

to see rows upon rows upon rows of tulips, in a rainbow variety of colors is breathtaking. I was snapping pictures like the farmers were paying me to do so. I loved the rural setting, the barns, the open fields, the mountains framing it all in.

then we packed up in the truck and headed home. it wasn't the most ideal road trip, but it was worth it. here are a few pictures from our adventure. my apologies-- I didn't bother editing, as getting these up here at all has taken way too long!

annual festival. I know what we're doing next april!

so...we drove up straight from church and I didn't think to pack other shoes instead of my riding boots I wore that day. thankfully, my always prepared husband had some extra size 13 tennis shoes in the back of the truck!

I was kind of obsessed with this barn.

the best family picture of the day. I was amazed we were actually all in it. a very kind, 80-something-year-old lady walked by and offered to take one for us. all in all, not bad!

i'm pretty sure he was singing to himself.

tulips!

more tulips!

and more tulips!
