one long night

11:00pm-- I got in bed kind of late (for me), due to being at a friend's Christmas ornament party. laughing and talking with good friends-- always a fabulous reason to stay up late. definitely beats staying up late to, I don't know, fold laundry (which is what I need to do).

12:50am-- toddler wakes up. I go to his room, tuck him back in his bed, and go back to sleep. I think this happened. I may have been sleep-walking.

1-something-- toddler wakes up. again. well, sort of. his diaper was soaked, so it was more like an uncomfortable sleep-whine. he really wasn't awake. I was tired of walking up the stairs, so I brought him down with me, changed his diaper, and snuggled in beside him in my bed.

3ish-- baby boy wakes up. what?!?! not sure why-- he is in the process of growing more teeth and has also had a stuffy nose. this combo has made him a bit more cuddly lately and the only reason I can think of for his ever waking up in the middle of the night. to mama's bed he went, too.

5:56am-- toddler sleep-wakes crying, "no-no-no-no-no!". maybe he was dreaming that it was bedtime. his sleep-crying woke up baby boy. awesome.

6:00am-- everyone (oh, except me) back asleep. whew.

8:33am-- toddler and baby boy awake. hallelujah for a little (and much-needed!) sleep-in!

sigh. I love these boys. they exhaust me, but in a great way. I confess I actually like snuggling up with them in our bed; although, the voice of reason reminds me that I don't want to make it a habit. nights like these make for long days. it's funny how when kids wake in the morning, they (unlike me) have no recollection of the night we just had. they just wake up and start new.

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 'The Lord is my portion,' says my soul, 'therefore I will hope in him.' "
Lamentations 3:22-24

a new day is always a good thing. a new day full of new mercies. thank you, Jesus.
